New essay about making 'LIES MY TEACHER TOLD ME' up at Lit Hub

I’ve got a new essay up at Lit Hub about my process and considerations in adapting James Loewen’s Lies My Teacher Told Me, as well as the book’s decades-long relationship to the moment we’re caught in today as we defend our democracy from reality-averse book-ban movements. Thanks for reading!

You can order signed & sketched copies of Lies My Teacher Told Me directly from me here.

If you’ll be at San Diego Comic Con this coming weekend, I’ll be discussing this book and Save It For Later on the “Nonfiction Comics” panel Saturday, July 27th at 2:30pm in Room 10, with a signing immediately afterward at Silver Sprocket booth 1718, and another signing Sunday 11:00am-1:00pm at Autograph Area table 10. See you there!

San Diego Comic Con schedule.

I don’t have a ton of stuff going on at SDCC this year, and I feel this marks a turning point in how I approach larger conventions. Maybe next year I’ll try the expensive risk of exhibiting in my own booth. I’m not sure.

Anyway, here’s my schedule:

Saturday, July 27:

  • “Nonfiction Comics: The Future of History-Based Storytelling” panel w/ Joel Christian Gill, Amy Chu, Sarah Myer, and David F. Walker, moderated by Andrew Aydin— 2:30 pm, Room 10.

  • Lies My Teacher Told Me signing immediately after the panel (TBC) at Silver Sprocket booth 1718.

Sunday, July 28:

  • Fall Through signing (& whatever else)— 11:00 am-1:00 pm, Autograph Pavillion Table 10.

  • Please buy Fall Through at Abrams booth 1216— thank you so much!

"RUN" is an Eisner Award winner!

We’re all deeply honored for our work on Run to have received this year’s Eisner Award for Best Graphic Memoir— a lot of love and dedication went into helping take John Lewis’ final living work across the finish line. Thanks to everyone who voted for either Run or Save It For Later in the Eisners this year, who came out to a panel, who helped John-Miles Lewis feel at home in the comics community, who attended a Save It For Later, Run, or Two Dead signing, and thanks to everyone at San Diego Comic-Con who did a good job following basic health and masking rules— I was encouraged by the general sense of consideration!

I’m still testing negative as of this morning— if you attended, I urge you to continue testing daily until you hit that sweet 3-day mark.

2 Eisner Award nominations!

I’m thrilled to announce that both Save It For Later (my solo graphic essay) and Run (written by Andrew Aydin & John Lewis, most art by L. Fury, first chapter/spot illustrations/sound effects by me, lettering by Chris Ross and me)have been nominated for Eisner Awards this year— in the same category, Best Graphic Memoir! Thanks to everyone’s faith in my work— this is a slightly weird situation to be in, so I urge you to vote as you see fit if you’re an eligible Eisner voter.

The new, expanded paperback edition of Save It For Later will be debuting at San Diego Comic Con— more info on signings & panels there soon!

The Eisner winners will be announced on Friday evening, July 22nd at Comic-Con International in sweet sweet San Diego— see you there!

COME AGAIN is nominated for two Eisner Awards!

COME AGAIN final 257 2.jpg

It’s a profound honor to find that Come Again is nominated for two Eisner Awards— for Best Graphic Album (New) and Best Writer/Artist!

It means so much to me that this book has resonated powerfully with readers. I feel it’s the best work I’ve ever done, hands-down.

I’m just as honored to be considered alongside so many of this year’s nominees— friends, peers, inspirations. Thank you for helping keep each other going!

Stay tuned for more information about when Eisner Award voting opens— the winners will be announced at Comic Con International in San Diego this July 19th!

To grab copies of Come Again, try your local comic book shop or bookstore, direct from Top Shelf or from me, and there’s always Amazon.

Thanks again for spreading the word— more soon!

MARCH: BOOK TWO wins an Eisner Award!

We're all thrilled and honored for March: Book Two to've won the 2016 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work! It was a deeply moving awards ceremony all around. Frankly, I don't see why people poo-poo the Eisner ceremony-- I always love being immersed in such a supportive community of folks, celebrating the hard work of their peers driven by ideas and the need to make something enduring. Go comics.

March: Book Three debuted at San Diego Comic Con as well, closing out the trilogy. We had a fantastic panel Saturday morning, a massive children's march across the length of the convention center, and some packed signings all weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out, endured lines, and got a chance to say hey to The Man Himself, the great John Lewis.

March: Book Three will be available everywhere on August 2nd-- we'll be discussing the book that evening on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, and will have a big signing at the Tribeca Barnes & Noble in Manhattan on August 3rd at 6:00 pm. See you there! Stay posted for more upcoming events, talks, and signings-- thank you!

MARCH: BOOK THREE signed pre-orders w/ free ERIN TOBEY "Middlemaze" download!

MARCH: BOOK THREE will be debuting at San Diego Comic Con on July 21st, and will be available everywhere on August 2nd!

I'm taking orders NOW for signed mailorder copies directly from me-- and for the rest of the summer, ALL book orders will include a free digital download of the fantastic Erin Tobey's landmark Middlemaze album-- hands-down, the best album of 2016!

Erin is an immensely talented and inspiring creative force, one of the best friends and finest people I've ever known-- she's also been involved with the design and production end of some of my comics work, and is a great cartoonist herself (and for comics trivia, is the person after whom Ruth from Swallow Me Whole is physically modeled). I'm so proud to team up with her on both of our new endeavors, and hope to spread her album far and wide. (If you're interested, she's also made tons of music in the bands Brenda's FriendFull Sun, Vollmar, Fat Shadow, Tammar, Pink Razors, Mt. Gigantic, and Abe Froman.)

You can also get a digital copy directly from Erin here, and order LP/cassette copies from Let's Pretend Records here.

Book orders will be shipping out as soon as the books arrive from the printer in late July. Also debuting at SDCC will be the limited-edition MARCH trilogy slipcase edition-- I won't be selling any copies directly, but you can order them from Top Shelf/IDW here.

Thanks, spread the word, and see you in San Diego! Stay tuned for an updated Team MARCH schedule of events and signings for the rest of the year.
